Where did this idea come from?
About 10 years ago I was laying on a beach in Cozumel, Mexico holding hands with my new girlfriend of a few months surrounded by a cloud of cartoon hearts, brilliant sunshine, soft sand and stunning turquoise waters. One of us took a swig from a cool Sol cerveza and said,”We should just live here.” The other one just sighed and said, “Yep” and took a swig off their own Sol – and that’s how this entire idea began.
From that trip on we began thinking about ways to live in paradise and (forgive the cliche) work just enough to get by rather than working our asses off just to pay the bills on a house we barely saw and cars that we only drove to work. We began taking “research trips” to places like Aruba, the Bahamas and St. Maarten but our hearts kept returning to the Riviera Maya. While we loved the rest of the Caribbean visions of Akumal, Puerto Morales, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen filled our minds and as soon as we’d return from one trip we’d begin planning the next.
Always tugging at the back of my mind was the thought “Other people do it, why can’t we live there?” As years went by we continued to fantasize and talk about moving “down there.” It was bad enough that I kept a street map of Playa del Carmen on the wall above my desk so that when I messed around and Googled stuff I’d know exactly where it was. And eventually the more research we did, the more we realized that while it would take effort and sacrifice, we could actually live down there. At that point the question changed to “When can we live there?” Then the wheels really began to spin for us and we started to put our plan into action.
It’s never a good time to leave behind your family and friends, the city that you love and everything else that has been a part of you for your entire life. But I think that to experience is to grow and growth feeds relationships so this journey will prove to be excellent for all of us. Why move to Playa del Carmen? Why not?
