Portuguese Man Of War

We are surrounded by wildlife here in Xcalak both on land and at sea. Lately there have been quite a few of these washing up on shore, it’s a Portuguese Man of War. I thought they were a kind of jellyfish, but National Geographic tells me I’m wrong and I’m guessing they would know. Regardless, while they are beautiful and fascinating to watch in the water, those tentacles dangling down in the water are deadly to certain fish and excruciatingly painful if they come in contact with a human. I understand that they can travel in large groups, sometimes in the thousands. I hope we’re not being invaded, that kind of war would mean I’d need to put on shoes – and that’s probably not happening. I guess this weekend I’ll be watching where I walk. You all be careful out there as well!
