Regardless of the title of this blog we certainly didn’t intend to go AWOL from here for so long. After a long – oh so very long – road trip through a good portion of Mexico and up into the United States we crashed and landed. And then spent a whirlwind few weeks catching up with friends and family while celebrating the holidays. And those friends and family? Well they cooked for us. A lot. And after our limited food options in Xcalak? Well we ate. A lot. And it was all oh so good. So I partially blame them and…

Coffee

There are very few things that I cannot go without. In fact that list has actually continued to get smaller the longer we live outside the United States. But there are a few things that I consider my lifeblood and right at the top of the list? Coffee. Okay, maybe wine too, but without my coffee not only am I miserable but everyone around me is as well. When traveling I always make sure to scout out where my source of coffee is going to be the next morning. So once we had gotten most of the pertinent information out…

HouseHunters International Playa del Carmen

First came Snooki and The Kardashians. And now? AWOL Americans. That’s right, there are reality stars here in the mix. We haven’t got our own reality show, but eons ago we did film an episode of the US television show House Hunters International and this week our episode is airing. For those of you aren’t fans or haven’t seen it, the show is a delightfully addictive television show that follows a person or couple as they look for a place to live in parts of the world outside the US (there’s a version called House Hunters for those looking for real…

Xcalak Beach Cleaning

Up to now I have always been a city boy. Yes, I am from Kansas but I’m from Kansas City, a bustling metropolis of more than 2 million people (larger than both New Orleans and Las Vegas I might add). I didn’t grow up on a farm, I never lived in a small town and no, I have never driven a tractor. I have always enjoyed nice restaurants, good food, museums, spending time with family, hanging out with friends at a local watering hole etc. You know, social events. My idea of “getting away from it all” was to go…

On the Road Again

We love Playa del Carmen. It is a place we have called home for over a year.  But we didn’t leave Kansas City to move to Playa. We moved away from Kansas City to live in and explore different parts of the world. After a year in Playa we have grown comfortable, very comfortable. We have a great apartment and great friends and our favorite restaurants, favorite beaches, etc. But what we have found is that we have fallen into a routine. A routine that is extremely comfortable. And that scares us. It would be so easy to just stay…

Helping my parents plan a recent trip to Playa I was struck with a bit of a dilemma, I really wanted to show off my adopted city to my parents but would they be able to fully appreciate it?  My parents are disabled and while both are able to walk on their own for short distances, Playa is very much a pedestrian and bicycle town with tons of steps, few ramps and even fewer handicapped parking spaces. Thus, the planning began to revolve around a central theme -is Playa del Carmen handicap accessible? The first thing we had to figure…

I’m about to admit something here that I haven’t told anyone. It’s pretty embarrassing. Some of you are going to be really disappointed in me and think I’m giving up too easily. Others are going to be proud that I can admit this while also saying ‘I told you so.’ But I just have to get this off my chest. So here goes. People, I brought too many shoes to Mexico. And clothes. And a whole bunch of other stuff that I can’t for the life of me figure out what I was thinking when I just HAD to find…

After a month at a less than ideal place we have finally moved and are getting settled into our longer term apartment we are renting in Playa del Carmen.  We can’t thank you enough for the opinions and insight you shared about what we should consider when picking out our new place. Starting our home search we had several things working against us. We possibly picked the worst time of year to move to Mexico (smart decision-making not always being our forte). It’s high season here. That means places are at full capacity so demand and rents are higher. Also, since…
